3歳にしてポリオにかかり、以降、ずっと鉄の肺によって呼吸を続けていた女性がいるそうだ。現代では、よりよい人工呼吸器もあるが、どうもポリオによって生じた背骨の異常により、鉄の肺以外の呼吸器が使えなかったそうだ。
ずっと鉄の肺から首だけ出していたような制限された環境にも関わらず、両親の助けもあり、彼女はだいぶ活動的な人生を送ったそうだ。
