Feature Request: KMS support - nV News Forums
All about Kernel Mode Setting (or why your $500 nVidia card only displays in 16-colors) | Scott James Remnant

Fermi系列はnouveauでもサポートされているらしい。では何故動かないのか。恐らく、Ubuntu 11.10が古いからではないだろうか。

Not all of these cards already work well using Nouveau, development is in progress. It is recommended to use the Linux 3.1 kernel or newer (or a backported driver from this kernel).

というわけで、3.2.6カーネルをつかうUbuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolinを待ってみようか。

Yeah I know.
But I guess that's because of their Tegra product.
My guess is that current nVidia's proprietary binary blob driver has a lot of duplication which should be better handled by Linux kernel rather than a driver.

These do-it-mysef code sometime reduce the cost of writing cross platform driver for a short term.

But in order to be accepted by mainline, they have to strip to the core.
